On Depression

<<>>

It’s like a wave that takes you down and holds you under with an unshakable grip while you claw at the water gasping for air until you’re down there so long that you start to give up, believing you are going die.

Then just as suddenly as it came, the clouds part and the seas become placid once again, and you calmly swim to shore safely watching the ocean tides flow in and out, so grateful for the view.

Depression is such a difficult and taboo topic to discuss because around it there exists so much stigma and shame. I have spent so much time thinking that there is something wrong with me, that I must be broken. Embarrassed, I withdraw from the world and quietly struggle until I can come up for air.

I am writing this because I want you to know that you are not alone.

I have had significant bouts of depression for as long as I can remember, ranging from days to months in duration. During these times, sadness and hopelessness overwhelm me and I can't see a way out. I isolate myself, unable to answer phone calls and emails because I can’t fake it and I don’t want to explain myself. I hold my breath and wait until the light can finally guide me back.

When I was younger I tried everything from anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications to food, alcohol, and drugs. In the end, all these provided for me was a brief escape from the pain only to leave me in deeper darkness as I came back to myself. That’s when I realized that the only way out is to go through the pain, to stay in the fire and allow it to transform me. What kept me alive through all of it was yoga. If I could only get my body on my mat I knew I would be okay. My mat became my loyal companion, a sacred space of self-exploration where I started to cultivate a deep level of self-awareness and began to excavate and let go of so many things that were holding me down.

Yoga was and is one of the most transformational healing modalities I have worked with and as I began to grow and shed the countless layers of self hatred, I felt deeply called to become a teacher myself. If I can help even one person in the same way that I have been helped, I will be fulfilled.

I experienced my most severe case of depression right after I graduated from college. I knew I needed to align myself with health and wellness in order to heal and blossom and it was then that I felt the call to teach.

With the love and support of my family, I quit my job, sold my belongings, and in a matter of weeks was in India at my first teacher training. Over the course of my training I began to feel something shifting inside me, I was coming back to life little by little. After my training was complete, I set out on my own, and led by faith I spent the next few months travelling all throughout India, continuing to evolve. It was the adventure of a lifetime. I ended up at Maha Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh, a festival that happens every 12 years, where tens of millions of people go to cleanse their karma and be released from the cycle of birth and death. I arrived at the festival in the afternoon, slept under a bridge and in the morning did my puja and bathed in the Ganges with thousands of other pilgrims.

When I eventually returned home, I stayed in a living room for five months in a two-bedroom apartment shared by three guys while I slowly built my career as a yoga teacher. What I found over the next few years was that there is no quick fix to depression. Just because I had become a yogi and dedicated my life to inner excavation, that didn't mean I would never be sad or have a bad day. In the years since then I have had depressive episodes but now it is a completely different experience. I never take my joy for granted for I am all too well acquainted with her dearest companion, sorrow.

I used to believe that experiencing depression made me weak, but now I see it as a superpower. The pain I feel allows me empathize with the human struggle and have great compassion for others who are suffering. Depression has been my teacher, forcing me to slow down so that I can see the things that are not working and make the necessary changes. It has shaped the course of my life and carved a path of healing for myself and others. Without experiencing depression I may never have made the commitment to a lifestyle of adventure, wellness and personal growth.

So remember, you are not alone, you are not broken, you are stronger than you can even fathom and this too shall pass...

Someone once told me that if you're lucky enough you will die many times within this life, not a death of the physical body, but of the ego. It is when the ego dies that we can experience oneness and eternal life.

Conscious Clothing

<<<>>>

Did you know, fashion is the third most polluting industry in the world after big oil and the second largest consumer and polluter of water?!

I know many of us are on the healthy/conscious eating train, shopping at our local health food stores and farmers markets, eating organic food, and cruelty-free meat products, so let’s take it one step further.

Eighty billion garments are produced each year, using 1 trillion gallons of water, 33 trillion gallons of oil, and 20 billion pounds of chemicals annually, leaving an enormous carbon footprint in its wake.

I personally went to downtown LA to the sprawling fabric district and much to my dismay I couldn’t find one place that sold organic, sustainable, vintage, or fair trade fabrics.

Needless to say, it’s gnarly out there!

In the age of man-made climate change and rising sea levels, why not do what we can and make responsible decisions as consumers and as creators?

One of the easiest things we can do as conscious consumers is to buy LESS, especially if you want to buy new sustainable clothing because it tends to have a bigger price tag than the conventional stuff. Then, recycle or donate old clothes so they don’t end up in the landfills.

Next, is to explore buying vintage or second hand from places like Buffalo Exchange or Wasteland. My favorite local Venice Beach vintage stores are Gotta Have It and Animal House.

And finally, there are some extremely inspirational companies that are stepping up and really contributing to our future here on this beautiful planet.

Check out my semi-extensive list below:

  1. My number one favorite brand right now is Reformation, not only are their clothes stunning, but they are one of the most environmentally conscious companies I have ever seen! They not only use vintage, deadstock, and environmentally friendly fabrics, but they create all of their clothing in LA and their warehouse is incredibly dialed, complete with eco office supplies, packaging, and clean energy!

  2. Junim is another LA based clothing company with adorable boho chic designs. They hand dye all of their pieces and use 90% reclaimed fabric!

  3. For yoga apparel I love Teeki. They not only have fun and stylish designs, but they make their clothing out of recycled water bottles!

  4. My favorite eco activewear companies are prAna and Patagonia, both companies are extremely dedicated to sustainability

  5. Raven + Lily works to support local artisans all over the world with sustainability in mind.

  6. Asos is not known for being an eco brand, but they have a line of reclaimed vintage clothes at an affordable price.

  7. For more affordable eco-wear check out H&M Conscious Collection

  8. For everyday basics that won’t break the budget check out Alternative Apparel and American Apparel

  9. Alabama Chanin, though on the much higher end is a lifestyle company with a really cool story that I first heard on The Moth. They are based in Florence, Alabama and use 100% Organic cotton, recycled, and reclaimed fabrics.

  10. Sustainable running shoes?! Oh yeah… All Birds

  11. Synergy Clothing for organic womens clothing and yoga apparel.

  12. Peace Treaty for scarves, jewelry, kaftans, and capes you can feel good about!

  13. Osei Duro is all about supporting the local apparel industry in Ghana and the use of  traditional artisan work like hand dyeing and weaving.

  14. For daily wear underwear and lingerie check out Brook There and Araks and Pact

  15. Amour Vert meaning Green Love in french is an LA based company that is aware of the negative environmental impact of the fashion industry and is making their mark in style!

  16. Doen is an LA based company, or collective of women whose mission it is to decrease the gender gap by supporting women in the workplace all over the world.

I know, lots of options! If I missed any amazing eco brands that you love, please let me know!

Check out Goodwell World if you feel as passionately as I do about taking active steps to better the world around us.

Rethinking death…

<<<>>>

I know, this might seem a little strange, but I was so excited about discovering the way I want to be buried when I die, that I feel compelled to share...

Okay, first of all I get it, morbid, right? Wrong. Not only is death one of the most natural things in life, but also, it’s inevitable so why not do it right?

Plus, when we truly contemplate death and realize the impermanence of this existence, we can finally give ourselves permission to live life fully. How liberating!

I was extremely inspired and felt absolutely enlightened about the environmental impact of how we bury bodies after watching artist Jae Rhim Lee’s Ted Talk about her mushroom burial suit.

Yeah that’s right, mushroom burial suit of magic, that’s what I like to call it.

So here’s the deal, when our bodies decompose they release toxic chemicals into our Earth’s soil. Not only do we mess up the environment in life, but apparently we’re not doing much better in death. Our normal burial traditions are terrible for the environment, this is where the mushroom burial suit of magic comes in. Lee has created an organic burial suit loaded with mushroom spores. These mushrooms have the ability to transform these toxic chemicals into organic materials that are actually beneficial to the environment! Essentially, our physical body becomes amazing mulch to nourish the surrounding plants and environment.

Thennnnn, I found out about Capsula Mundi which is a project that wants to create a natural burial pod to “plant” into the earth when we die. Once buried, a seed of the tree of choice will be planted on top of the pod so a tree will grow in its place.

How beautiful is that?! Instead of a field of tombstones, a forest of trees! That’s the kind of legacy I’d like to leave behind.

So my master plan of death is to be buried in a mushroom suit inside the seed so that my body becomes nutritious mulch for the tree that will grow in my place contributing to the eternal cycle of life. Remember,  energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change form.
